Vehicle Accidents:

3-26-26

Christina Pitman, 35, of Nokomis was traveling south on county highway 1 in Johnson Township when a deer entered the roadway. The vehicle made contact with the deer on the diver side of the vehicle.

Thomas Getting, 20, of Mt. Auburn and Norma Shartzer, 94, of Mt. Auburn.

Getting was traveling north on Maple St. and Shartzer was traveling west on E Main St. when Getting failed to yield the right of way and struck Shartzer in the intersection.

Erin Paulson, 42, of Centralia was traveling west near 2470 E 100 North RD when the vehicle left the roadway to the right and entered a ditch. The vehicle then struck a culvert.

53 year old, Kelly Christa of Hillsboro, was arrested by the Taylorville Police Department for possession of 5<15 Grams of Meth.
 

21 year old, Prentice Frost of Taylorville, was arrested by the Pana Police Department for Burglary.

36 year old, Christopher Herpstreith of Taylorville, was arrested by the Taylorville Police Department for Aggravated Battery/Great Bodily harm.

43 year old Deanna Durbin of Edinburg, was arrested for Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Resisting/Obstructing Officer.

Eric Klein, 46, of Pana was arrested by the Christian County Sheriff’s Office for Escape.

Stephen Waggoner, 44, of Pana was arrested by the Christian County Sheriff’s Office for Possession of Methamphetamine.

The Taylorville Police Department reported the following vehicle crashes to Regional Radio News;

Robert E. Declerck entered the parking lot of the Casey’s General Store located at 401 N. Cheney St. and struck the parked vehicle of Keri J. Ginger. Ginger’s car was unoccupied at the time of the incident. Declerck’s passenger side front quarter panel struck Ginger’s rear driver side quarter panel. Then Declerck proceeded to put his vehicle into reverse, and continued to reverse out of the parking lot and across Spresser St. and into the parking lot of 1010 West Spresser, T.C.’s Barber Shop. Declerck’s tailgate struck the tailgate of the parked and unoccupied car of Josiah J. Hobson. Declerck then put his vehicle back into drive and drove back across Spresser and re-entered the parking lot of Casey’s General Store, and struck the side of the building causing major damage to the building. Declerck received major front end damage causing all of the air bags to deploy, Declerck’s passenger,Trisha Declerck, was transferred to St. Johns hospital by Dunn’s Ambulance due to injuries, Declerck was transported to Taylorville Memorial Hospital by Dunn’s Ambulance.

Collin A. Shoemaker and Rian N. Castle were both traveling Eastbound on Spresser through the intersection on Spresser when according to both Shoemaker and Castle, a driver in front of Rian abruptly and forcefully applied their brakes causing Castle to be forced to slam on their brakes causing Shoemaker to strike the rear end of Castle’s vehicle with his front bumper. Both vehicles remained derivable, the driver causing the abrupt stop was not affected, and no injuries were reported.

Dawn R Smith and Dakota L. Brown were parked in a parking lot off of Springfield Road. Both parties were parked with their vehicle front end’s facing west bound when Smith backed straight backwards striking Brown’s vehicle on the front end with the rear end of their vehicle. Brown had noticeable damage to the front bumper and grill, as well as a possible radiator leak due to the crash. Brown’s car was towed from the scene due to the potential leak. Smith’s car sustained minor damage to the rear bumper.

A juvenile driver was traveling south bound on South Main Street and came to the intersection of Main Street and Vine Street, came to a stop, but failed to see a vehicle traveling westbound as they proceeded to enter the intersection. The west bound vehicle, driven by Amanda Chronister, was struck on the rear passenger side of their vehicle. , Chronister’s vehicle was towed due to damage. The juvenile’s vehicle was derivable.

Shawn T. Bartel, age 34, of Springfield Illinois, was arrested for DUI, Possession of
a Controlled Substance and Indecent Exposure.

Justin R. Rahar, age 45, of Taylorville, was arrested for DUI.

Rufino Esparza Morales, age 19, of Taylorville, was arrested for Driving a Vehicle
While Registration Suspended.

3/06/26

April L. Bitter, age 42, of Assumption Illinois, was arrested for Driving a Vehicle
While Registration Suspended.

The Taylorville Police Department investigated the following crashes: 

February 25th 4:41 PM Ashley E Bauer of Pana was traveling behind Matthew H. Rogers of Taylorville who was traveling northbound on N. Webster St. Rogers began turning right, into the parking lot of 301 N. Webster St. Bauer attempted to pass Rogers in the right shoulder, off the roadway when Bauer struck Rogers vehicle.

On February 26th at 3:21 PM Jacob D. Mathis of Pana was stopped in traffic at 401 Springfield Road when Lilyan G. Harden of Owaneco failed to reduce speed to avoid an accident and struck Mathis.  Both drivers refused medical treatment.

Kevin Durham, 62, of Taylorville was arrested by the Taylorville Police Department for Possession of Methamphetamine.

Shane Farris, 40, of Taylorville was arrested by the Taylorville Police Department for Meth Delivery.

Shawn Bartel, 34, of Springfield was arrested by the Taylorville Police Department for Possession of Controlled Substance, Intimidation, Arson and Public Indecency.

Tyler Stevens, 27, of Taylorville was arrested by the Taylorville Police Department for Domestic Battery.

Bradley Wiseman, 49, of Taylorville was arrested by the Taylorville Police Department for Criminal Trespass to Residence and Violation of Pretrial Release.

3-2-26

Raymond Rogers, 45, of Taylorville was arrested by the Christian County Sheriff’s Office for Violation of Order of Protection and Domestic Battery.

The Taylorville Police Department reported the following to Regional Radio News;

The Taylorville Police department investigated the following crashes/accidents:

On January 30th on the 600 block of N. Webster Street at 7:06 PM, Dillon M. Washburn of Taylorville and Thor M. Shanks of Taylorville were traveling northbound on Webster.  Washburn did not check their blind spot according to police, before changing lanes and struck unit.  No injuries were reported. 

On February 13th, 2026 on North Webster at 7:12 AM, Troy A. Smith of Stonington was traveling southbound on N. Webster and attempting to turn west onto Spresser Street.  David A. Ackerman of Taylorville was traveling eastbound on Spresser and was in the turn lane to turn northbound onto Webster. Smith slid while braking to turn crashing into Ackerman. No injuries were reported. 

On February 14th, 2026 in the Walmart Parking Lot at 11:51 AM. April D. Sneddon of Nokomis was traveling east in the parking lot and struck a parked vehicle.  No injuries were reported. 

On February 21st, 2026 at 7:20 AM on Cheney Street. Braxton J. Twist of Springfield did not stop at the red light, entering the intersection westbound on W. Spresser Street.  Twist struck Samantha J. Moss of Taylorville in the intersection.  Moss was heading south on Cheney and had the right of way with a green light.  Moss was struck in the drivers side by Twist.  Twist was issued a citation for disobeying traffic control device.  Both drivers were transported to area hospitals. 

On February 2nd, 2026 at 7:46 PM at 630 N. Webster Street. Walter D. Ostermeier of Taylorville was backing out of the parking lot and struck two vehicles that were in handicapped spaces.  Ostermeier kept backing up pushing vehicles into each other.  He left the scene and was later located and the vehicle was towed.  Ostermeier was also identified and issued 3 citations.
