Two Effingham-area soldiers who gave their lives while serving their country will be honored Tuesday with the dedication of two memorial overpasses.

The dedication ceremony is scheduled for 2 PM Tuesday, August 11th, at the Workman Sports Complex in Effingham. The memorials were established through two Illinois Senate Joint Resolutions (SJR), filed by Illinois State Senator Steve McClure.

The resolutions designate the Fourth Street overpass over Interstate 57 and Interstate 70 as the Chief Warrant Officer 2 Christopher Donaldson Memorial Overpass. The Fayette Avenue overpass over I-57 and I-70 will be designated as the Sergeant Timothy Sayne Memorial Overpass.

Donaldson was a 1995 graduate of Effingham High School. He served as a Chief Warrant Officer with the U.S. Army’s 3rd Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, part of the Army’s 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum in New York. Donaldson was killed on May 5th, 2006, when a CH-47 Chinook military helicopter crashed during combat operations in Afghanistan.

Sayne, also an Effingham High School graduate, served with the Army’s 5th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, which was part of the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division’s Stryker Brigade Combat Team. Sayne was killed in action in Afghanistan on September 18th, 2011.

Tuesday’s dedication will honor the service and sacrifice of both men, while creating permanent reminders of their commitment to their country and community.
