The Social Security Administration reminds the public of available monthly benefits to those for whom a parent has died and who meet eligibility rules.  The benefits are meant to support those who are experiencing the emotional challenges of this situation and may also face new financial hurdles.  Jack Myers, a public affairs specialist with the Social Security Administration, says the payments are generally only available for minors, with a few exceptions. 

The amount a beneficiary may receive depends on how much the deceased parent paid into Social Security and what other benefits the family is already collecting. 

Those paying into Social Security can use the agency’s website, www.ssa.gov, to determine how much their children would receive if they die. 

The application for survivor benefits cannot be completed online; it must be done either over the phone or at a field office.
