The Coffeen Fire Department alerts motorists traveling between Christian and Montgomery counties to plan for delays beginning Tuesday, August 4.

Illinois Route 185 will be closed from just east of Graham Correctional Center to Coffeen for approximately six weeks as road construction gets underway. Drivers traveling through the area will need to use alternate routes while the work is completed.

Officials are asking motorists using Coffeen Road as a detour to use extra caution. Unlike Route 185, Coffeen Road is narrower and may require drivers to slow down and be more aware of oncoming traffic.

Drivers are also reminded to use extra care at rural intersections, where tall corn and other crops can reduce visibility and make it more difficult to see approaching vehicles. Reducing speed, watching carefully in all directions, and allowing extra travel time can help prevent crashes during the construction period.

The Route 185 closure is expected to remain in place for about six weeks, weather permitting. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, follow posted detour signs, and use caution to help keep themselves and others safe while construction is underway.
