The Illinois Department of Public Health is encouraging all Illinoisans over the age of 18 to get the COVID-19 vaccine booster dose six months after receiving their second Moderna or Pfizer vaccine, or two months after receiving the one-dose Johnson & Johnson.
Dr. Ngozi Ezike, Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health says that this decision comes from the FDA but the IDPH supports the decision.
She encourages everyone to prep for what may come.
Early data shows that the vaccine effectiveness against COVID-19 infections is decreasing over time. Dr. Ezike says that you already get a booster shot with your flu vaccine. While Dr. Ezike encourages everyone to get the same type of vaccine for both their first and second doses, the CDC says that mix and matching booster shots are allowed. Individuals can contact their health care provider or visit www.vaccines.gov to find a nearby location to receive a booster dose.
