Experts are encouraging homeowners to consider sustainability in their property’s landscaping.  Many commercial establishments and other large-scale sites are designed with the concept in mind, but homeowners can make changes, as well.  Controlling rainwater drainage and where it goes is one major component.  Andrew Holsinger, a horticulture educator at the University of Illinois Extension, notes that topography, vegetation, drainage patterns, and wetland buffers are key factors. 

So how does one implement these sustainability efforts at home?  Holsinger suggests first taking stock of what there is to work with. 

Trees, boulders, native shrubs, and permeable paving are among the notable components of sustainable landscapes.
