The American Red Cross says its volunteers stayed busy throughout Illinois during the month of July, responding not only to severe storms, tornadoes and flooding, but also to dozens of home fires across the state.

According to the Red Cross, volunteers responded to 125 home fires during July, helping 365 people, including families with children, as they worked to recover from those emergencies. The organization says those home fires came during an already active disaster season, with volunteers also responding to multiple weather-related emergencies.

Red Cross disaster teams provided emergency supplies, emotional support, health and mental health services, financial assistance, and temporary shelter to those affected. Volunteers continue working with many families to help meet their ongoing recovery needs.

The organization is also seeking additional volunteers as disasters become more frequent. The Red Cross says major disasters are now occurring somewhere in the country about every two weeks, creating a growing need for trained volunteers.

Some of the greatest needs include Disaster Action Team members who assist families after home fires and other emergencies, shelter volunteers who help care for disaster victims, and transportation specialists who deliver lifesaving blood to hospitals.
