Search teams from central Illinois played a key role this week in the investigation that led to two felony arrests after human remains were recovered from Lake Mattoon.
On Monday, the Hillsboro Fire Department Dive Team and the Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency Drone Team responded to a request for assistance from Illinois State Police Zone 8.
On Tuesday, the Litchfield Fire Department and Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) Division 56 Dive Team also joined the search. Crews spent hours assisting investigators, using dive teams, sonar equipment, high-resolution drone cameras, and thermal imaging technology to search the lake.
The investigation began June 28th when boaters discovered what appeared to be a human arm floating in Lake Mattoon. Additional remains were later recovered, and investigators used distinctive tattoos to identify the victim as 38-year-old Dalewayne Turner of Plainfield.
Illinois State Police say the investigation led special agents to execute a search warrant Wednesday at a home in Plainfield. Authorities arrested 26-year-old James Adams and 62-year-old Robin Turner. Both are charged with Concealment of a Homicide, a Class 3 felony, and Dismembering a Human Body, a Class X felony. Additional evidence was recovered during the search.
The suspects remain in custody, and Illinois State Police say the investigation is ongoing with additional charges expected. State police also credited numerous local and state agencies, including the Hillsboro and Litchfield dive teams, Montgomery County EMA, and several departments from the Mattoon and Effingham areas for their assistance during the investigation.
