Gov. JB Pritzker Names This Week Rail Safety Week

Trains move faster than it appears.

Gov. JB Pritzker proclaims September 20-26 as Rail Safety Week in Illinois.

During 2020, there were 98 vehicle crashes reported at public highway-rail grade crossings. 15 people died and 32 were injured in Illinois alone.

Trains also struck 55 pedestrians resulting in 28 fatalities and 27 personal injuries. Illinois has the fourth highest rate in the nation for grade crossing fatalities in 2020.

Illinois Commerce Commission Rail Safety Program Administrator Brian Vercrysse says that there are too many lives lost and families devastated to crashes involving trains.
