The man who led police on a chase from Shelby County to Christian County and was arrested outside Taylorville made his first appearance in court this morning.  Deven Barger appeared in custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections alongside attorney public defender Bradford Rau.  Barger waived his preliminary hearing, waived arraignment, and plead not guilty to the charges. He demanded a trial by jury and requested pretrial only. His next court date is set for September 16th. Barger is accused of killing Samantha Cushing and her unborn child in Shelbyville on July 8th.
