There's a legendary piece of real estate available overlooking a cozy town of nearly 400 people. The historic and enormous Old Gillett Farm on Elkhart Hill outside Elkhart in Logan County will be sold at auction August 10th in Springfield. The 785 acre farm, sitting some 800 feet high, was founded by John Dean Gillett, a man known in the mid 19th Century as the “Cattle King of the World.” He was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln. Michael Fine with Chicago based Fine and Company says selling off the farm has been a one of a kind experience.
Fine says the property has a history of VIP visitors.
Earnest Hemingway passed through on his way to Florida and Marshall Field would stop his private train car to join Gilett on trips to the Kentucky Derby.
