National Weather Service Reports Snow Totals

The Regional Radio listening area received from a little to a lot of snow Friday night into mid-morning on Saturday.

The biggest snowfall total was in Springfield where some eleven inches fell. The Christian-Shelby County area received anywhere from 7 to 9 inches, while significantly less snow—in the one to 4 inch range—fell from Bloomington to Decatur.

The National Weather Service in Lincoln says the heaviest snow was centered near the I-72 corridor, with heavy totals extending south towards I-70. 5 to 10 inch totals were common within this band, with locally higher amounts up to one foot.

From I-70 to the south, a wintery mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain fell. This kept snow totals generally under a couple of inches, but ice accumulations of one tenth, to one quarter inch were reported.

There was a very sharp cutoff to the northern edge of the snowfall. Little to no snow was reported north of a Havana to Bloomington line.

While little or no snow is expected this week, extremely cold temperatures will be back as a result of a Jet Stream that is now over the southern United States, allowing bitterly cold air to move south from Canada.
