A car-train accident in Taylorville early Sunday morning (9-21) has claimed a life.
According to a news release from the Taylorville Police Department, Christian County 911 got a call a few minutes after 2:00 am Sunday about an accident involving a train and a vehicle. When officers arrived at the intersection of South Main and Palmer Streets, they reportedly found the vehicle along the tracks, fully engulfed in flames. The Fire Department was summoned, and extinguished the blaze.
Christian County Coroner Amy Winans declared the apparent driver of the vehicle dead at the scene. The unidentified victim was reportedly taken to Bloomington, where an autopsy is scheduled for Monday (9-22).
The incident remains under investigation by the Taylorville Police Department, the Christian County Coroner's Office and Norfolk and Southern Railroad.
