Eagle Creek State Park Installs Hunting Blind for Those With Disabilities

Hunters with disabilities can avail themselves of a new hunting blind installed in time for the busy fall hunting season at Eagle Creek State Recreation Area on Lake Shelbyville.

Eagle Creek SRA Site Superintendent Richard Glazebrook said the blind structure was constructed by Eagle Creek campground host Mike Welch.

Glazebrook says that the blind was designed with disabled hunters in mind, so that they will be able to see out of the blind, shoot out of the blind in every direction, be protected from the weather, and have a plenty of room for a wheelchair and a buddy.

Eagle Creek SRA staff provided the materials for the blind and assisted Mike Welch with the construction and installation of the blind.

Mike is a retired heavy equipment operator, a Vietnam veteran, a hunter and understands the problems that hunters using a wheelchair face.

Mike Welch and his wife Carol live in Bethany, near Eagle Creek, and they have served as campground hosts at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources site for seven years.

The new blind for hunters with disabilities will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Eagle Creek State Recreation Area is located on the western shore of Lake Shelbyville near Findlay, IL.
