Wong hits 2 HRs, Cards top Red Sox

Coverage of today's Cards and Orioles game can be heard on The Big 870AM/96.3 FM Newstalk WTIM beginning at 5:30pm.

St.  Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Kolten Wong smacked a pair of solo homers
among his three hits and scored three runs as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated
the Boston Red Sox, 5-2, in the finale of a three-game set.

Adam Wainwright (14-6) struck out seven and allowed two runs on seven hits and
two  walks  over seven innings  for the Cardinals, who  have won four of their
last five games.

Wainwright  became the  second pitcher  in the  majors to  reach 14  wins this
season after Milwaukee's Wily Peralta, who did it earlier Thursday.

"It was just another grind, another battle," Wainwright said. "I think I
finally made some good adjustments that helped me in the long run today."

Jhonny Peralta cracked a two-run double among his two hits and scored a run in
the victory.

Pat Neshek worked a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his third save of the season.

Brandon  Workman (1-5) surrendered  four runs on six hits and two walks over 5
1/3 frames for Boston, which has dropped seven of its last nine contests.

"That  got  me today, I  put up  a three-spot in  the first," Workman said. "I
threw well after the first."

The Cardinals opened the scoring with three runs in the first.

Matt  Carpenter  worked a leadoff walk  and Wong followed with a single. After
Matt  Holliday flied out, St. Louis executed a double steal with Carpenter and
Wong.

Matt Adams struck out, but Peralta followed with a slicing one-hop double into
the  gap in  right-center to bring home Carpenter and Wong. Oscar Taveras then
rolled a base hit through the hole on the right side to bring home Peralta.

Boston got two runs back in the third.

Brock  Holt  and Dustin Pedroia began  the inning with singles and Mike Napoli
singled  up the middle with one out to plate Holt. Christian Vasquez's two-out
base hit up the middle scored Pedroia to cut the gap to 3-2.

Wong  clubbed his first homer of the game into the front row of seats to right
in  the  fifth and launched  his second blast  deep into the spectators behind
right in the seventh to stake the Cards to a 5-2 edge.

                                   Game Notes

The Cardinals were  2-for-6 with  runners in  scoring position,  while Boston
finished  2-for-11 ... Wong has nine homers this season ... Wainwright lost to
Boston twice in the 2013 World Series.
