Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Barnes singled in the go-ahead run
in the 10th inning to boost the Colorado Rockies over the Chicago Cubs, 6-4,
on Wednesday.
Wesley Wright (0-2) walked Nolan Arenado and Drew Stubbs before giving up a
one-out single to Michael McKenry. Barnes stepped to the plate with the bases
loaded and hit a single to left. Stubbs then scored on a wild pitch to make it
6-4.
Adam Ottavino worked around a two-out single in the bottom half of the 10th to
pick up his first save in the big leagues.
The Rockies had dropped the first two contests of this four-game series,
including a 16-inning loss on Tuesday.
"The way we've lost some games, it seems like it's been Murphy's Law around
here, so it was nice to see us fight for that win because they haven't been
coming easy," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.
Brett Anderson got the start for Colorado and struck out nine while giving up
two runs on 11 hits over seven innings. Rob Scahill (1-0) pitched a scoreless
ninth for his second major league win. He was recalled from Triple-A Colorado
Springs before the game.
Chicago starter Travis Wood set a career high with 11 strikeouts, but remains
winless in eight starts dating to a 3-0 win at Philadelphia on June 15. He
gave up four runs on eight hits over six innings.
"It was definitely a positive," Wood said. "I had good command of most of my
stuff. Missed with a few and they made me pay."
The Cubs tied the game at four on Luis Valbuena's two-run homer in the eighth.
Tom Kahnle was almost out of the inning after recording two quick outs.
Starlin Castro then hit a deep fly ball to the wall in center that Stubbs
dropped. Castro reached second on the error and scored on Valbuena's blast to
right.
Earlier, the Rockies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Arenado hit
a two-out double to left and raced home on Justin Morneau's single to left.
Colorado tacked on two more runs in the second. McKenry led off with a
single and crossed the plate on Charlie Culberson's double to left. After
Anderson struck out looking, Charlie Blackmon hit an RBI double to left-center
field.
The Cubs finally got on the board in the fifth. Ryan Sweeney hit a two-out
single and scored on John Baker's double down the left-field line.
Each team scored a run in the sixth. McKenry's double scored Stubbs in the top
half, while Chris Coghlan crossed the plate on Valbuena's infield single in
the home portion.
