Wainwright hurt as Cards blank Mets

Coverage of tonight's Cards and Mets can be heard on Newstalk 97.3 WTIM beginning at 5:35pm.

Flushing,  NY  (SportsNetwork.com) - St.  Louis pitcher Adam Wainwright tossed
seven  scoreless  innings before leaving  Tuesday's 3-0  win over the New York
Mets with a hyperextended right knee.

Wainwright  (4-1) was at 79 pitches when he stumbled awkwardly while trying to
field  a chopper on a play that ended the seventh inning. He gave up just four
hits and struck out three.

The  right-hander was coming off a two-hit shutout last Thursday in an 8-0 win
at Washington.

"Well  I  expect to  get off  to a strong  start and  finish strong too," said
Wainwright.  "I've made  some good adjustments. I'm more of a complete pitcher
than I've ever been in my career so I'm just having fun doing that."

Jon Jay went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Cardinals, who improved to 5-4 on an
11-game road trip. Matt Holliday went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

Dillon  Gee (1-1) allowed  two runs on six hits over six innings for the Mets,
who fell to 2-3 on a 10-game homestand. He had four strikeouts and two walks.

The Cardinals  got on  the board  in the fourth.  Holliday walked, Matt Adams
singled and Yadier Molina singled to load the bases with no outs. Jay followed
with  a two-run single  to center. St. Louis couldn't get anything else in the
inning.

Holliday robbed Chris Young of a tying homer in the fifth. After Daniel Murphy
reached  base on  a bunt single, Holliday reached over the left-field fence to
take a homer away from Young.

Holliday added an RBI single in the ninth to make it 3-0.

"It  seemed  early  on  in  that  (fourth)  inning  I  got  myself  into  that
predicament,"  said Gee. "It  was one of those things were you get a couple of
ground  balls  and they find holes  and then all of  a sudden you're in a mess
there."

After  Wainwright  exited, Kevin Siegrist  pitched a perfect eighth and Trevor
Rosenthal tossed a scoreless ninth to record his sixth save of the season.

                                   Game Notes

Wainwright  improved to  3-4 lifetime against the Mets ... Molina extended his
hitting  streak to 13  games ... New York third baseman David Wright had a 12-
game hitting streak snapped after going 0-for-4.
