The Taylorville Municipal Airport was the topic of interest at the weekly Taylorville Kiwanis club meeting. Bill Newberry discussed the history of the airport from its humble beginnings of grass runways to the modern airport we have today. He detailed their strategy for cutting expenses when the city took over the airport in 2007. Those included the installation of automated gas tanks, solar panels, and gas and electricity meters in the hangars. He estimates there are between 4,000 to 6,000 landings and take offs per year. The airports immediate future plans include a 700 foot extension of the taxi runway. For more information on the club, go to taylorvillekiwanis.com
