It’s been a snowy winter in Illinois this year. By early February, snowfall totals were well above their normal average but snow in late February and early March elevated those totals even more in Central Illinois. Effingham has now seen 35.4 inches this year compared to a 15.2 inches average. This year is tied for the 7th snowiest winter in Effingham with the snowiest coming in 1977-78 when 40.6"inches fell. Springfield has seen a total 45.0 inches compared to an average of 20.9 inches. This is the third snowiest winter in Springfield with the snowiest also being in 1977-78 when 52.1" fell. Many other Central Illinois towns have seen snowfall 20-30 inches above the average.
