Taylorville native and Illinois State Trooper Nathan Shanks was involved in a 5-car accident Tuesday afternoon. Around 3:30pm, several vehicles collided near mile-marker 79 on Interstate 57. Initial reports say that Shanks’ vehicle caught on fire which caused ammunition round to fire off from inside the vehicle. Shanks was airlifted from the scene and transported to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. Shanks suffered several fractured bones and severe burns but is now reported to be in stable condition at Mercy Hospital. Two other individuals were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The Illinois State Police is investigating the incident and there is no clear cause of the crash at the moment.
