The National Weather Service in Lincoln reports that a new winter weather system is headed for central Illinois. A trough of low pressure is expected to move out of the western plains states, moving into Missouri and western Illinois on Friday.
The storm system will begin to spread snow across central and southeast Illinois Friday afternoon. Once the snow develops, periods of snow are expected into Saturday. However, the majority of the accumulation will fall late Friday afternoon and Friday night. Most areas will see snowfall accumulation of 3-5 inches before the snow ends. However, a potential mix with sleet or freezing rain in southeast Illinois may reduce snow totals there.
Residents should be prepared for changing weather conditions Friday afternoon into Saturday.
