Rep. Davis Accepting Service Academy Applications

U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis of Taylorville has announced that he is accepting applications from constituents from the 13th Congressional District interested in attending a U.S. Service Academy.

“As a Member of Congress, I have the privilege of nominating constituents to our nation’s service academies,” said Davis. “The honor of attending a service academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve in the military upon graduation, so I applaud our area’s young men and women who are considering a service academy and look forward to assisting them along the way.”

Members of Congress are asked to nominate candidates to the U.S. Service Academies each year, and the number of vacancies for each congressional district is determined by law. Candidates can be considered for openings at the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis, Md.), U.S. Military Academy (West Point, N.Y.), U.S. Air Force Academy (Colorado Springs, Co.) and the U.S. Merchant Marines Academy (Kings Point, N.Y.).

To be considered for appointment all applicants must be: a U.S. citizen; a legal resident of the 13th District; at least 17 but not more than 23 years of age on July 1, 2014; single; and have no dependents. It is recommended that applicants contact the academy or academies of their choice to request a pre-candidate questionnaire, which is the first step in the Admission Office’s evaluation..

The deadline for the submission of applications to Congressman Davis’ office is November 1, 2013. Final nominees will be selected based on their high school record, ACT or SAT scores, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, essay responses and an interview. Nominees will be announced in December.
