Superintendent Fuerstenau Predicts Dismal Financial Year Ahead

Dr. Gregg Fuerstenau, Superintendent of the Taylorville School District, predicted a grim future in terms of finances at the Taylorville School Board meeting on Monday night. Fuerstenau said that the pension push from the state to local districts has a high probablity of being passed which would lead to a major impact on the district's budget. He also noted that the state fiscal woes were not getting any better. Fuerstenau did have some positive news in terms of the budget saying April was a very good month as the taxes were flowing but the month of May could bring about a different story.

The School Board approved the resignation of the following staff: Peggy Breckenridge, W. Lee Meteer, Paula Kunzeman, Christine Young, Noma Wright, Dee Held, Vivian Kay Myers, Erin Driskill, Lynn Rice, and Lisa Sims. They also approved a recommendation to employ Bill Hall for Science and Math at Taylorville High School.

The longest conversation of the night came from the proposal for a new phone system at Taylorville High School. The proposal was to go with a Mitel system through NewWave Communications instead of either Midco or TechElectronics. After 30 minutes of questions and discussion, the Board came to a decision to have the proposals re-bid as the exact specifications were not sent to all 3 companies as they were not known at the time of the initial bid.

The Board approved several increases in prices for the 2013-2014 school year. Driver's Education will increase from $100 to $150, there will be a ten cent increase for breakfast and lunch, and a technology fee of $25 will be added. Registration prices will stay the same because of the addition of the technology fee.

In other action, the Board unanimously approved the list of seniors who were eligible for graduation.

After a lengthy closed session, the meeting resumed with the Superintendent's report. Fuerstenau brought awareness to the following events: Baccalaureate Service on Wednesday, May 15 at 7:00 pm, Vocational Banquet on Thursday, May 16 at 6:30 in the High School Cafeteria, High School Graduation on Saturday, May 18 at 5:00, and the Junior High Orientation on May 21.

The meeting adjourned at approximately 8:40 pm.
