The state house recently passed a tax increase on cigarettes of $1.00 per pack. This legislation has been sent to Governor Pat Quinn’s desk for him to sign.
Taylorville native Kathy Drea with the American Lung Association says that the increase will keep some kids from smoking.
Drea says that the increase will not hurt convenience stores.
Drea says that the bill includes many other tobacco products, not just cigarettes.
Drea says that she has already seen an increase in people who want to quit.
The measure passed 60-52 in the state house with opponents of the bill saying that the bill could force some people to buy cigarettes out of state.
