The synthetic drug trade is a growing industry in Illinois but Attorney General Lisa Madigan is fighting back. Her "Operation Smoke Out" initiative has busted one of Central Illinois' major distributors.

William F. Brockman of Wholesale Tobacco and Candy in Jerseyville is suspected of supplying synthetic drugs to convenience stores from Benton to Decatur. Madigan says she's not sure what, if any, charges will be filed against the wholesaler.

Illinois has banned certain chemical combinations that create drugs like Spice and K-2 but manufacturers have found ways to skirt the law.

Now Madigan is backing legislation that will clarify the definition of what a synthetic drug is, address the fact that the drugs are being marketed to youth, and stiffen the penalties for anyone caught selling the drugs.
