City Council Meets, Discusses Curbs, Sidewalks, Swears In New Police Chief

Chief Wheeler gets sworn in as New Police Chief from Judge Brad T. Paisley.

The Taylorville City Council met Monday evening and appointed a new police chief, but the fireworks came early this week as discussions about a sidewalk stole the main stage of the meeting. Judge Brad T. Paisley swore in new Police Chief Dwayne Wheeler in front of most of his peers and companions. Wheeler promised unity saying, “We are all in this together” to a cheering room that gave a standing ovation for the new Chief.

The discussion got a little heated with remarks from Steve Millings, a general contractor, who was very upset after a recommendation to the city council to replace the curbs and sidewalks along the parking lot at West Main Cross, Webster, and Market Streets was tabled.  Millings was upset because he had already started on the project.

The recommendation had been tabled by Ernie Dorchinecz who defended his actions by stating that he needed more time because he had been given conflicting and different answers than Taylorville Mayor Bruce Barry had received.  After much debate and Mr. Millings showing the aldermen the actual contract he had with him, the motion had already been tabled so nothing could be done about it till the next City Council Committee meeting.

Other actions that happened at Monday’s meeting included Taylorville naming July 1st Ella Hohenstein day for her contributions in music and theater and approving a business development district committee.  Mayor Barry also informed the aldermen that there are a lot of sewer issues.

The next city council full meeting will be held on July 15 at 7 PM.

Ella Hohenstein receives her plaque from Mayor Barry.
