Lynn, Cards down Padres

Cardinals continue series with Padres tonight at 5:40pm on 96.3 WTIM.

St.  Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Lance Lynn pitched six strong innings and
the  St.  Louis Cardinals  held off the  San Diego Padres,  4-2, in the second
contest of a four-game series.

Lynn (13-8) surrendered six hits, a run, walked one and had six strikeouts.

Matt  Adams  and Jhonny  Peralta each had  a pair  of hits and  an RBI for the
Cardinals, who posted their third straight win. Pinch-hitter Oscar Taveras had
a run-scoring single.

Will  Venable doubled in  San Diego's first run in the fifth inning and pinch-
hitter Yasmani Grandal hit a two-out homer off Pat Neshek in the ninth.

Tyson  Ross (11-11) loaded the bases on walks in the first inning and ended up
yielding  five  hits and three  runs over six frames  to suffer his first loss
since  July 13  at Dodger Stadium. The  right-hander had been 4-0 over a five-
start span.

The Padres have lost back-to-back contests since a five-game winning streak.

Matt  Carpenter, Kolten  Wong and Matt Holliday all walked to start the first.
Adams  then  lined a hit  to center. Peralta plated  Wong with a grounder that
produced an out at second.

Wong  singled in Jon Jay in the fourth before Venable's double to right-center
scored  Jace  Peterson in the  fifth. The Padres failed  to add on, though, as
Tommy  Medica  struck out  and Seth Smith  popped out to  leave two runners in
scoring position.

Taveras  singled  in Jay in the  eighth, and Neshek, after giving up Grandal's
blast  to  center, surrendered  a double  to Chris  Nelson. Venable struck out
swinging to end the game and give Neshek his fourth save.
