Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Rizzo hit a walk-off RBI single in
the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 3-2 win over the
Tampa Bay Rays to salvage a three-game set.
Ryan Sweeney led off the 12th with a single against Cesar Ramos (2-4) and
moved to second on Chris Coghlan's sacrifice bunt. Javier Baez then reached on
a strikeout wild pitch to put runners on the corners. Another wild pitch
allowed Baez to advance to second and Rizzo followed by launching his single
into the gap in right-center.
"That was big, he stayed on it," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said of Rizzo's
at-bat. "Fortunately for us, we outlasted them today."
Carlos Villanueva (5-6) tossed a scoreless top of the 12th to earn the win.
Baez and Rizzo each went 2-for-6 with Baez also driving in a run for Chicago,
which played its sixth extra-inning game in its last 12 contests.
Desmond Jennings had an RBI double among his two hits for the Rays, who had a
three-game winning streak snapped.
Both teams plated a run apiece in the fifth and seventh innings.
Curt Casali hit a leadoff double in the top of the fifth and later scored when
a charging Baez committed a throwing error on Jennings' infield single. Baez's
RBI single in the home half tied the score.
Jennings cracked a one-out RBI double in the top of the seventh. Sweeney hit a
one-out double in the bottom of the frame and Coghlan followed with a triple
to plate him and make it 2-2.
