Household Hazardous Waste Collection to Take Place May 17th

The Christian County Solid Waste Management Department and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency are co-sponsoring a household hazardous waste collection day on May 17th. The event will take place at the Christian County Fairgrounds in Taylorville from 8:00am-3:00pm. Items that will be accepted include: oil based paints, paint thinners, old gasoline, mercury, and cleaning products. This collection is for residential waste only and the event is free of charge. Acceptable Wastes:

Oil based paints, paint thinners, herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, old gasoline, pool chemicals, mercury, cleaning products, double bagged and wetted asbestos, household batteries, used motor oil, drain cleaners, lawn chemicals, solvents, antifreeze, hobby chemicals, aerosol paints and pesticides, fluorescent lamp bulbs, and old and outdated medicines and pharmaceuticals.

 

Unacceptable Wastes:

Latex paint, agricultural chemicals, business/commercial sector wastes, explosives, fireworks, lead acid batteries, medical wastes, controlled substances, propane tanks, smoke detectors, farm machinery oil, fire extinguishers, institutional wastes, sharps, needles, and potentiallly infectious medical wastes
