There is an effort ongoing in the Illinois Legislature to allow psychologists to prescribe certain medicines to their patients.  Currently in Illinois, only medical doctors and psychiatrists are allowed to do so.  According to licensed counselor Karen Vatthauer, psychologists should be able to prescribe medicines under certain circumstances:

Vatthauer says under the current system, a patient may need to see 3 professionals just to get a needed prescription:
