Major Francis M. Long Honored on Taylorville Square Sunday

On Sunday afternoon there was a ceremony held to honor Major Francis M. Long of Taylorville who fought and died in the Civil War for the Union.

Kip Johnson a speaker at the event and a Historian of the 41st Illinois Volunteer Infantry for which Long fought says that Long and the 41st had courage, valor and heroism.

Johnson says that there are some parallels between the today’s service men and women and those who fought in the Civil War.

The monument dedicated to Major Francis M. Long is on the northeast corner of the courthouse lawn. This monument is just across the street from P.S. Printing, where the Long House Hotel which Major Long worked at used to stand.
