The New Extension Educator

Andrew Holsinger is the new Extension Educator, Horticulture serving Christian, Jersey, Macoupin and Montgomery Counties.  His program focus will be in ornamental horticulture and fruit and vegetable production. Holsinger joined University of Illinois Extension on November 7, 2011 and is currently learning about the horticultural needs of the area while preparing for upcoming educational programs.

Holsinger graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a bachelor’s degree in Plant and Soil Science with a specialization in landscape horticulture and a master’s degree in Plant and Soil Science focusing on woody plant propagation.  He has prior fruit tree experience from working at a peach orchard. Holsinger also brings experience from previously working at the DuQuoin State Fair in the grounds department.

Holsinger will be coordinating Master Gardener programs. Planning and preparation are underway for the next class of Master Gardeners which is scheduled to begin on January 26, 2012. Holsinger is busy updating the horticulture section of the Unit’s website, meeting with Master Gardeners and developing his program focus. He is glad to be aboard the University of Illinois Extension team and looks forward to meeting growers and gardeners alike and exploring the exciting world of Extension
